The Bench Notes

Fewer tools, looked after properly.

A small set of good tools, kept sharp and kept dry, will outlast three sets of cheap ones and be more pleasant to use every time. That is the whole argument for learning to look after them, and it is mostly a matter of a few habits rather than any particular skill.

Most tool advice is really shopping advice, which is the least useful part. Knowing when a chisel needs honing rather than grinding, or why a plane leaves a ridge, matters far more than which brand it has stamped on it.

These notes cover the basics of choosing, sharpening and storing hand tools, with the reasoning included so the decisions carry over to whatever you own.
